You often hear a lot of people who possess a lot of money, power, fame or even those who have a family or are in a relationship being seen as “blessed”. But not as many people truly consider what the word blessed is really supposed to mean. Quite frankly, to be blessed is to have something good bestowed upon someone by the holy or in the name of God. Immediately this definition alone is enough to counter the layman’s definition of “I’m blessed.” However, there is a point when “the blessed” becomes a curse. But don’t just take my word for it.
What the Bible says about being blessed or cursed
In the King James Version of the Bible Matthew 6:24 reads: “No man can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
What we have today are millions of people who want to have their cake and eat it too. They choose to live however they want. They do whatever they need to do to get what they want. And upon getting what they want they justify it or have others justify them as being holy. Lying and stealing is not holy, cheating on someone or getting divorced is not holy. Nor is selling your half naked body on Facebook or Instagram to get one million likes. Yet, we continue to hear that many of these people are blessed.
When someone is truly blessed
Determining if someone is truly blessed has nothing to do with judging them without knowing them. It has more to do with people not being hypocrites and holding themselves accountable to a framework of beliefs. Essentially it boils down to one thing. If you choose to believe in God then believe in God; if you choose to be an atheist then be an atheist. But you don’t get to choose one and freely enjoy all the convenience of the other without the consequences.
Blessed is seen as something good under the context of spirituality or religion. So if someone happened to become a billionaire by stealing from others or renting out whores then people need to leave the word blessed out of it. There is nothing holy about prostitution, deception, greed or apathy; these are merely the work of a devil. Don’t get it twisted.
Being Blessed is more than having possessions
It’s rather easy to see someone as being blessed based on everything they possess in this world. But Matthew 6:19-20 also states, “19: Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.”
If you really were to meditate on the aforementioned scripture it becomes even clearer. Treasures in heavens, in accordance to biblical scriptures, are seen as true blessings. Such blessings are superior to anything that can be obtained on this earth.
Are you Blessed or are you cursed?
Many continue to say that others are blessed, even without understanding the truth about the word spirituality or what’s written in any holy book like the Bible. People simply need to stop fooling themselves. If actions do not align with the desires of a higher power that is positive and supreme they may just need to accept that “the blessed” could actually be cursed.
Mark 8:36 also mentions, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” The choice is clear. You can “be blessed” or you can save your soul. Which matters more is your call.
